My philosophy as a teacher is to reach a student through material that is interesting and fun. Then I can use this material to communicate theory and technique. In playing something enjoyable, the student is inspired to practice. It is important to provide any student with new music that continues to challenge the him or her. As a teacher, I continually adapt my teaching methods and taylor them to the personal goals of the each student. I draw from a personal book of exercises, music, licks, published books, and from many years of experience as a professional guitarist in Chicago.
My experience as a teacher includes a bachelors degree from Northwesten University and a Masters Degree in music from DePaul University, as well as 10 plus years of teaching experience. I teach most styles and focus heavily on improvisation, which I feel is an excellent way to learn the instrument and music theory. Not to mention, it's also fun! I perform regularly as a professional jazz guitarist, and continue to practice many hours in order to develop my art. I am continually searching for new ways to simplify the instrument for my own pursuits and this continually informs my teaching methods. If you want to catch me playing live, check the gigs/performances tab on my website!
Lessons are $35.00 for 30 minutes and $60 for an hour. Lessons take place on a weekly basis and occur at my Chicago Ravenswood area apartment. I am also available for in-home lessons for an additional fee based on driving distance.
